Connect your own AI to your book

New Quest can lend your book to the AI you already use. Once connected, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Codex, Cursor or OpenCode can read your scenes and story facts when you ask a question, instead of guessing from whatever you pasted last week. It runs on your own subscription. New Quest sells no AI credits, and none of this is needed to write.

The connection is read-only. Your AI can read, check and suggest. It cannot change your manuscript or your story facts. You decide what goes into the book.

Before you start

You need three things.

1. A New Quest account on the free trial or on Cloud. The connection is included in both.
2. An AI tool you already use, signed in with your own plan. Claude Code and Claude use your Claude plan; ChatGPT and Codex use your ChatGPT plan (Codex can also use an API key); Gemini uses your Google account; OpenCode and Cursor use whichever model provider you have set up in them.
3. AI access turned on for the book. It starts off for every book. In New Quest, open the book, go to Settings, tick Allow AI access to this book and press Save AI choice. Books you leave off stay closed to every connected tool.

Every tool below connects to the same address:

There is no API key to paste. The first time you connect, your tool opens a New Quest page in the browser. Sign in, check the tool's name, and approve it.

Claude Code

Run this once in any terminal:

1. Start Claude Code and type /mcp.
2. Choose new-quest, then Authenticate. A browser opens. Sign in to New Quest and approve.
3. Ask it something only your book knows, such as "Using New Quest, give me a session brief for my book."

--scope user makes New Quest available in every project. Leave it out to add it to the current folder only.

Codex

Run this once in any terminal:

Current versions notice that New Quest uses sign-in and open it straight away. If yours does not, run:

codex mcp login new-quest

Prefer to edit the settings file? Add this to ~/.codex/config.toml, which the Codex CLI and IDE extension share, then run the login command above:

OpenCode

Add New Quest to ~/.config/opencode/opencode.json for every project, or to opencode.json in one project's folder. If the file already has an mcp section, add the new-quest entry inside it.

Then sign in:

opencode mcp list shows whether it is connected.

Claude on the web and desktop

1. In Claude, open Connectors. At the time of writing it sits under Customize; the menu moves between releases, so look for the word "Connectors".
2. Choose Add custom connector.
3. Name it New Quest and paste https://mcp.newquest.app/mcp.
4. Press Connect, sign in to New Quest and approve.

A connector you add on the web also appears in the Claude desktop app. Anthropic currently allows one custom connector on the free plan.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT connects custom apps in developer mode, on the web, on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans. On a work plan, your administrator may need to allow it. OpenAI's menu names change between releases, so look for the words below rather than an exact position.

1. In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode.
2. Open the apps page, select the plus button and create a developer mode app for a remote MCP server.
3. Name it New Quest, paste https://mcp.newquest.app/mcp and choose OAuth for authentication.
4. Save, then sign in to New Quest and approve.

Gemini

With the Gemini CLI, run this once in any terminal:

Then start Gemini CLI and sign in:

In the Gemini app, custom apps are currently limited to personal Google accounts in the US, for people aged 18 or over, in English, with Keep Activity turned on. If that is you:

1. At gemini.google.com, open Settings, then Connected Apps.
2. Under Custom apps, choose Add a custom app and paste https://mcp.newquest.app/mcp.
3. Choose Next, then sign in to New Quest and approve.

An app connected on the web also appears in the Gemini mobile app.

Cursor

Open ~/.cursor/mcp.json (create it if it is not there) and paste this, or add the new-quest entry to the mcpServers you already have:

Save, then open the Customize page in Cursor, where New Quest now appears among your MCP servers. Sign in to New Quest when Cursor asks.

Other MCP clients

Any app that supports MCP connections, meaning it can add a remote MCP server by URL and sign in to it, should work. Give it https://mcp.newquest.app/mcp. A few older tools only speak the original transport; if yours refuses that address, use https://mcp.newquest.app/sse. We have written steps only for the tools above.

What it can and cannot do

For the books you have allowed, your AI can:

• Read chapters, scenes and scene text, list a scene's saved versions, and read the compiled book.
• Read characters, places, items, factions, maps, notes and recorded events, and what was true at a particular scene.
• Search the book, and read a scene through a character's eyes.
• Check a draft against your story facts, list open promises and reveals, compare prose with your voice profile, and put together a revision or session brief.

It cannot:

• Change anything. Writing scene text, editing story facts, adding notes and restoring versions are all refused. It can suggest; you decide.
• Read a book whose AI access is off. If books share a story world, your AI can read none of them until every book in that world allows it.
• See anyone else's books.

What your AI reads is sent to your provider and handled under its terms and data settings, not ours. New Quest does not train models on your book.

What to ask first

• Give me a session brief for my book. Where did I leave off?
• Check chapter 12 against the story facts. What contradicts what I recorded?
• What have I promised the reader that I have not paid off yet?
• I am about to write the tavern scene from Fitz's point of view. What does she know, and what has she not learned yet?

A good answer sometimes says something is not recorded. That is the useful kind of answer: it tells you to decide, rather than inventing a fact for you.

Disconnect

1. In New Quest: open Connectand press Revoke beside the tool. It stops reading your books straight away.
2. For one book: untick Allow AI access to this book in that book's Settings.
3. In the tool: remove the server so it stops trying.

Claude Code:

OpenCode: sign out, then delete the new-quest entry from your config.

Claude: remove the connector from the Connectors page. ChatGPT: remove the app from its apps page. Gemini app: remove it under Connected Apps. Cursor: remove it on the Customize page, or delete the new-quest entry from mcp.json.

Turning access off stops new reads. It cannot recall text your provider has already received.

If it does not work

• "No AI-enabled book could be selected." AI access is off for that book. Turn it on in the book's Settings.
• "Sign-in did not carry over." Open New Quest in the same browser, make sure you are signed in, then connect again from your tool.
• The tool says your free days are spent. Your writing is safe and still exports. The connection returns when you choose Cloud.
• Nothing opens in the browser. Most tools print the sign-in address as well. Copy it into a browser where you use New Quest.
